The actress Lacey Turner, who played Stacey Slater in EastEnders, has revealed she spent "hours" marching around car parks to train for her new role as a soldier.

Lacey, who was in the BBC1 soap for six years, is now appearing in the new TV film, Our Girl.

She plays a young girl who joins the army because she's fed up of her dead-end job.

The 24-year-old said preparing for the part was physically tiring.

"I had an idea I would have to do some kind of training," she said. "But I didn't realise how hard the marching would be.

"I spent hours and hours marching around car parks with a plastic rifle."

The actress said she had to pay a lot of attention to detail when she was rehearsing for the role.

She added: "I mean your thumb has to be in line with your trouser seam. Your fingers have to be in a certain way when you salute.

"Your hands, your head, your feet, everything has to be moving at the same time.

"And your rifle weighs like four pounds on top of everything else, so you have to carry a bit of extra weight."

Our Girl is on BBC1 Sunday 9pm
