Ellie Goulding praises 'great' Big Weekend atmosphere

Ellie Goulding said there had been a "great atmosphere" after performing at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry.

The singer took to the Main Stage in Ebrington Square for a set including Anything Could Happen and Lights.

"Nice to see all your lovely faces. OK, I'm feeling a little bit more relaxed now. That's good. I was in a right stress," she said on stage.

The previous night, Ellie had sung at amfAR's annual Cinema Against Aids Gala in Cannes, hosted by Sharon Stone.

"It was a really great cause and an amazing party but it was one of those situations where you just keep thinking 'what on earth!'"

Speaking after her Big Weekend performance in Derry, Ellie Goulding said: "Audiences really vary in vibe and energy and even though the weather isn't the best here, everyone was up for it and I really bounce off that."

Before Ellie Goulding, 20-year-old Conor Maynard performed on the Main Stage.

He did a mash-up of Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry Child as part of his performance.

"That was an experiment," he said afterwards.

"I was in Spain recently doing a couple of shows and one day we were in the dressing room just jamming and that was one we thought sounded really cool."

Two Door Cinema Club opened Saturday's proceedings at 1pm.

"To have people come over to the other side of the country is brilliant. It gives people the chance to see something they wouldn't normally see."

The Saturdays played without bandmate Rochelle Wiseman, who's recently given birth.

Una Healy said: "We do rehearse as a four. We've done a few shows now so we're getting used to it. It's never the same without Rochelle, without any member there."

Frankie Sandford, who's currently pregnant, also said she forgets about her baby bump when she started performing.

Fan Emma O'Donald, 24, was impressed: "I can't believe she managed to dance in those heels, fair play to her."

"I also can't believe this events in Derry. It's amazing."

At the mid point of the Radio 1 Big Weekend the Police Service of Northern Ireland said they were "encouraged at the success of the event"

In a statement they added: "We continue to appeal to people attending the concert to adhere to police advice and be responsible in relation to their alcohol intake with a view to their own safety and the safety of others."

The Vaccines, Alt-J and Labrinth are all on Saturday's line-up as well with Biffy Clyro headlining the event.

Fans have already seen artists including Rita Ora, Rudimental and Two Door Cinema Club.
