Biffy Clyro and Eminem close Reading & Leeds Festivals

Biffy Clyro headlined Reading Festival while Eminem performed for the second time in two nights to close Leeds.

The Ayrshire rockers played tracks including Black Chandelier and Bubbles and finished with a rendition of Mountains.

The band, playing their eighth Reading Festival, blasted flames from the top of the stage and ended with fireworks.

"Reading - we've waited a long time for this," frontman Simon Neil told the crowd.

"Hopefully we can do it again some day.

"It's been the best night of our lives."

Eminem played the same set as he did the night before in Berkshire.

Earlier in the day at Reading, a large crowd watched the return of Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy.

The band released their fifth studio album Save Rock and Roll earlier this year after a three-year break.

They brought out British singer Foxes for Just One Yesterday and revealed the inspiration for another new track The Phoenix.

"When we were writing this song we were thinking of this festival," said Pete Wentz.

Lumineers, best known for their track Ho Hey, played one song - Darlene - from the middle of the crowd with frontman Wesley Schultz jumping the barriers and pushing his way through the crowd with his guitar.

Elsewhere Alex Clare played his final date of the year in the Radio 1/NME tent while AlunaGeorge covered This Is How You Do It by Montell Jordan after playing crowd favourite Attracting Flies.

On the Festival Republic stage Ohio double act Twenty One Pilots revealed they'd had to turn down an offer to play at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York because they were already booked to play Reading Festival.

The band finished their set with Car Radio, a track Paramore's Hayley Williams says she can't stop playing.

At Leeds Bastille again packed out the Radio 1/NME tent.

The band's lead singer Dan Smith said: "The crowds were amazing in Reading. Really fun.

"But a lot of people were getting crushed at the front. I feel bad about that."

At the Yorkshire site there were also sets from Foals, Jake Bugg and Alt-J.

Chase & Status again played before headliner Eminem.

"It was probably one of the best gigs we've done," said band member Saul Milton.

"There's nothing like a UK crowd and a Reading crowd is special. That festival is legendary.

"It was a real moment. It was an honour."

According to the latest update from Thames Valley Police there have been a total of 51 arrests at the Reading site with 101 crimes reported.

These arrests included possession of drugs and charges of being drunk and disorderly.

The latest figures from West Yorkshire Police show that 18 people have been arrested at Leeds Festival for offences including suspected assault, theft and drug possession.

A small number of tickets for next year's festivals go on sale on Tuesday.
