Foo Fighters have mocked reports that they're breaking up in a new video posted on YouTube and Facebook.

Following Dave Grohl's performance at the Oscars earlier this week, several websites in the US had questioned whether he'd decided to go solo.

But the band have denied those rumours by releasing a parody video showing what might happen if they did split up.

A message at the end of the clip says: "For the millionth time, we're not breaking up. And nobody's going solo."

The video begins with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl talking to producer Butch Vig about the possibility of going solo.

They chat about his performance of the Beatles' Blackbird during the "In Memoriam" section at the Academy Awards earlier this week.

"Maybe it's time for me to do my own thing," says Dave Grohl.

"There was just something about being on stage by myself. It was me. Nothing against those other guys. I love those other guys. They love me.

"I feel like they'd be really happy for me because I'm holding them back.

"I'm setting them free. It's a win win situation. Those guys get to do their thing and I get to find myself and be me."

After their chat, the video switches to the band talking on the phone about Dave Grohl's decision and then a meeting between the four remaining members - Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins and Chris Shiflett.

The band talk about possible replacements including Justin Bieber, Diplo, Phil Collins and Billy Corgan - putting a list together to go through.

"So let's just book some time, we'll get in the rehearsal room, we'll work through the list and we'll see what sticks," says guitarist Chris Shiflett.

In the end they settle on Nick Lachey, Jessica Simpson's ex-husband, who used to sing in US boy band 98 Degrees.

The band get him to sing their track Everlong before the video cuts to the "end board" with a message to fans that they're not breaking up.

In real life - the band are taking a break after touring for two years off the back of 2014's Sonic Highways.

Drummer Taylor Hawkins told Artisan News, external that the world needed a rest from them.

"We're on hiatus right now," he said. "We're on an indefinite hiatus.

"That's not because we don't love each other, or don't want to make music together. We did so much in the last five or six years.

"We as a band could go into the studio tomorrow and have just as much fun as we ever had, but I think that the world needs a break from us for a little while."
