Skepta up for three Mobos as Kano and Laura Mvula lead nominations

The nominees for the 2016 Mobo Awards have been revealed and Skepta's huge 2016 continues.

He's up for three awards - including best male - after his Mercury Prize win last week for his self-released album Konnichiwa.

Kano and Laura Mvula lead the way with the most nominations overall, with four each.

And Craig David is in the running for two awards, 15 years since his last Mobo win back in 2001.

The singer is recognised for best male and best British single for his Big Narstie collaboration, When The Bassline Drops.

"I remember rocking up to the 2000 awards, I had my 'Buy British' red jumper on and I was proud to be walking up there," the singer tells Newsbeat.

"It feels full circle to be standing here again. It's crazy."

He thinks the best single nod is even more important for Big Narstie, having risen up through the grime scene.

"It's great for Big Narstie to be nominated," he says.

"I'm like 'Bro! Look how far you've come, you're up for a Mobo now'."

Grime dominates with Skepta, Stormzy and Kano all nominated in best male and Lady Leshurr in the best female category.

Craig David compares the rise of the genre to the UK's garage scene, where he found fame in the 1990s.

"You can see the grime scene, in the same way the garage scene did," he says.

"It was bubbling and all of a sudden exploded onto the mainstream and at that point, you can't hold it back.

"What it does, is it forces the hand. Radio starts really supporting it, TV performances start changing and you see more grime artists performing."
