A Summer with Blossoms

There are few bands who can say they've had a year like Blossoms: playing 150 gigs and putting out a number one debut album.

In January the five-piece came fourth on the BBC Sound of 2016 poll.

Since then, they've matched David Bowie and Adele with two consecutive weeks at number one upon release of their album.

Since leaving the Stockport scaffold yard where they formed three years ago, they've toured the world.

But in a video documenting what they call a "life-changing" summer, the band tells Newsbeat this is "just the start".

"We're always looking ahead. We want longevity," said singer Tom Ogden.

He says the endless stream of tour dates, including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and several stadium dates have been the bands way of laying down a marker.

"They're not the benchmarks in our brain of what determines that we've 'made it'.

"We are very proud of what we've done, though. To come from complete obscurity is quite remarkable, it doesn't really happen that much these days.

"It's just started. To some people 2016 is when it started so you've got approach it like we did three ago."

Blossoms have played in Radio 1's Live Lounge twice this year

Drummer Joe Donovan added: "In five years if we're speaking to you about an album that's a consecutive number one then we'll be like 'yeah we've done something'.

"We don't want it to stop. We're a bit tired but we just want to carry on."

"It's been insane," admits bassist Charlie Salt.

"As the festivals are getting less often now and we've got more time at home I think it'll sink in.

"We'll have more time to think about what we've done over the summer.

"At the minute it's not really hit us.

"I feel like we've got some solid foundations to build on and we want to just carry on on this trajectory."

Singer Tom is already working on the band's second album

Tom explained he's already started writing "for what will be the second album" and uses their days off to work on new songs.

"I wrote a song with the line in it 'I crashed the car with you in it' because I overhead a couple having a go at each other.

"The guy said 'tell me the truth or I will crash the car with you in it' I was like 'I'm having that'.

Joe added: "That's good that - very harsh though."
