Furry? Tick. Big eyes? Tick. Cute? Tick.

As Star Wars fans got their first glimpse of the new trailer for The Last Jedi, the question on everyone's lips was: Who is Chewbacca's new mate?

The footage lasts just two seconds and shows an adorable creature squawking in fear next to his hairy companion as the dramatic action gets going.

Turns out it's called a Porg - and it's already proving to be big hit with fans.

Victoria Graveyard said on Twitter: "My roommate who doesn’t care about Star Wars saw the Porg and screamed 'WHAT IS THAT I WANT ONE'.", external

While Parker Molloy added: "Needs... More... Porgs.", external

According to Wookieepedia, external, the Star Wars encyclopedia, they're sea birds "native to the planet Ahch-To, where Jedi Master Luke Skywalker made his exile in the years following the Battle of Endor."

They were apparently inspired by puffins , externalwho live on the island that was used to film much of Luke Skywalker's scene in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Puffins are said to be the inspiration for the cute Porgs

Like puffins, the birds can fly and build nests. Unlike puffins though, Porg babies are actually called Porglets (in case you were wondering puffin babies are actually called pufflings).

Even Star Wars' creative executive Pablo Hidalg thinks Porgs are cute.

"You fall into those deep, soulful eyes. I think a lot of people are going to want a Porg as a pet," he told the Star Wars website.

They're pretty mischievous as seen here terrorising BB-8.

But just because they look cute, it doesn't mean that they're all sweetness and cuddles.

When asked by a fan what a group of Porgs are called, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson had one simple word:

Murder., external

Before Porgs, there were Ewoks - the original adorable Star Wars characters.

The Ewoks, of course, helped the Rebellion defeat the Galactic Empire. The "murder bears" were so popular, they even had their own TV series and cartoon.

Not the cutest Ewok picture - but you get the idea

Both Porgs and Ewoks have similarities - they're small and inquisitive.

Now fans are losing their minds about whether Ewoks will finally have to hand over their cuteness crown to these new creatures.

One Twitter user said: "People telling me they like Porgs better than Ewoks #TheLastJedi", external

"Okay the Porgs are now cuter than Ewoks," said another., external

"Don't know how I feel about the Porgs. Those who complained about the Gungans & Ewoks have no right to enjoy the Porgs," said Clark Herlin., external

Some have argued though that the introduction of Porgs may be a cynical marketing plot by Disney.

"Everyone hating on Porgs now remember how you mocked them when it’s December and you can’t find the Porg toy your kid wants for Christmas," said one fan., external

But forget Ewoks or Porgs, there may be another entrant in the race for the cutest Star Wars creature.
