Constituency Profile

The level of home-ownership in Cathcart is the highest in Glasgow, yet there are also large council estates including Castlemilk, a scheme which lies to the western edges of the constituency. The seat features the whole of Pollok Country Park – one of the largest urban green spaces in Europe. It also includes the national stadium, Hampden Park, the home of Scottish football.

The constituency of Glasgow Cathcart hit the headlines in 2004 when the Labour MSP and peer, Mike Watson (Lord Watson of Invergowrie), set fire to curtains in an Edinburgh hotel in a drunken incident after a politicians’ awards dinner. Lord Watson was forced to resign the seat and serve eight months in jail.

The subsequent by-election in September 2005 was won by Labour’s Charlie Gordon, the former leader of Glasgow City Council. He retained the seat in 2007, but was beaten by James Dornan for the SNP in 2011.
