Constituency Profile

Swansea East has seen substantial investment and economic regeneration in recent decades.

Projects have included the rebirth of the docks area as Swansea marina, and it was one of the first industrial enterprise zones in the early 1980s. Major local employers include the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Morriston Hospital. The constituency boasts Premier League football courtesy of Swansea City, who share the Liberty Stadium with the Ospreys regional rugby team. Comfortably held by Labour since the first assembly election in 1999, the party had a majority in Swansea East of 8,281 in 2011 with 58.4% of the vote, followed by the Tories on 14.6%, Plaid Cymru 12.4%, the Lib Dems 8.8% and BNP 5.8%.
