Torrey Canyon wreck reclaimed by sea

The seabed off the Cornish coast seems to have almost recovered after the Torrey Canyon oil tanker spill, says Paul Rose, expert diver and presenter on BBC documentary series Britain's Secret Seas.

The ship was carrying more than 119,000 tonnes of crude oil which gushed out into the pristine Atlantic waters and polluted the Cornish coast and western Guernsey in 1967.

The RAF dropped thousands of bombs on the stricken vessel to sink it and try to disperse the oil.

The dive team found the wreck was covered in seaweed and unidentifiable at first, and evidence of bombs still there.

Britain's Secret Seas begins with a programme on the Giants of the West on Sunday 8 May, on BBC Two at 2000 BST, and continues over the next four Sundays.
