Shafilea Ahmed murder 'a vile act', say police

The parents of 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed have been found guilty of her murder and jailed for a minimum of 25 years.

The teenager went missing from her home in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2003 and was found dead on the banks of the River Kent in Cumbria six months later.

Iftikhar, 52, and Farzana Ahmed, 49, had denied her murder but the jury at Chester Crown Court returned guilty verdicts against them both.

Det Supt Geraint Jones from Cheshire Police described the murder as "a vile and disgraceful act".

"The abuse she suffered was motivated by her parents' desire to control her - to make her conform to their interpretation of Pakistani culture", he added.
