In pictures: Entwistle's short BBC reign
George Entwistle took up the post of director general on 17 September saying he was "the right person for the job." and was "very excited about all that lies ahead." BBC Trust Chairman Lord Patten described Mr Entwistle as a "creative leader".
Addressing BBC staff in his first week as director general Mr Entwistle said he wanted to "redouble" efforts to improve further the "creative quality" of what the BBC produced.
Prior to his post as director general he was Director of BBC Vision which involved overseeing all the BBC's major channels. As part of his role he was responsible for the BBC's coverage of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The broadcast attracted more than 4,500 complaints, mainly due to the tone and presentation.
Just weeks after he started his new role he was questioned by members of the House of Commons' Culture Media and Sport Select Committee regarding the dropped Newsnight investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile and the BBC's editorial chain of command.
Mr Entwistle told MPs of the Culture Select Committee that he was determined "do everything we can to put [it] right". He said he was convinced there had been "a problem of culture within the BBC".
After seven weeks and five days as director general George Entwistle resigned amid the Newsnight child abuse broadcast which led to Tory Lord McAlpine being wrongly implicated. He said as director general he was "ultimately responsible for all content as the editor-in-chief".
Lord Patten, who appeared alongside Mr Entwistle when he announced his departure, said it was the "saddest evening" of his public life. He added: "George has very honourably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes - the unacceptable shoddy journalism - which has caused us so much controversy."
