Sir Terry Wogan took centre stage to host the annual Children in Need telethon for the 34th consecutive year. During six hours of live television, his co-hosts included Tess Daly, pictured, Fearne Cotton, Zoe Ball and Nick Grimshaw.

At the start of the show, Jane Torvill, a figure skater who won Olympic gold 30 years ago, switched the ice rink for the dancefloor to partner Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan. She was competing against her partner on ice, Christopher Dean.

The entertainment was interspersed with moving appeals for funds to help disadvantaged children. Throughout the show donations rolled in and, by the end of the night, an emotional Sir Terry said the record-breaking £31,124,896 total was "beyond our wildest dreams".
