The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have ended their visit to the US with a fundraising event in aid of their former university.

Prince William and Catherine were guests of honour at the dinner at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The gala was held to mark the 600th anniversary of Scotland's University of St Andrews, where the couple met.

Guests included Princess Eugenie and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Prince William said the couple had received a "first class" education at the university.

"St Andrews' blend of academic excellence, mixed with a liberal approach to critical thought and creative reasoning, is one that both our nations, on both sides of the Atlantic, credit with importance," he added.

Guests at the event, which featured an appearance by the US comedian and chat show host Seth Meyers, paid between £1,600 and £6,400-a-head.

They drank in the Velez Blanco Patio, surrounded by 16th Century marble statues from Spain.

And they dined in the Temple of Dendur - a room decorated with statues of Egyptian gods which was constructed to house an Egyptian temple built just before the birth of Christ.

Other guests included Mary-Kate Olsen, the actress turned fashion designer who is one half of the Olsen twins, and her partner Olivier Sarkozy, half-brother of the former French president.

Opera singer Renee Fleming, a triple-Grammy award-winning soprano, performed Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and the Puccini aria, O Mio Babbino Caro.

The event raised £2.2m for the university, some of which will go towards scholarships.

During the couple's three-day trip to the US, the prince held talks with President Barack Obama and gave a speech to the World Bank on wildlife crime.

The couple also visited the 9/11 memorial centre in New York, where they paid tribute to those who died during the terrorist attacks in 2001.

They also attended a basketball match, where they met singer Beyonce and her husband, rapper Jay-Z.
