Some of the biggest stars from the worlds of film and TV have attended the first major ceremony in the awards calendar, the Golden Globe Awards, in Beverly Hills.

British actor Eddie Redmayne won the award for best actor in a film drama for his role in The Theory of Everything

Fellow Brit Ruth Wilson brandished her award for best actress in a TV drama for her role in The Affair

Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt was the first British winner on the night, collecting the prize for best supporting actress in a TV series

George Clooney was awarded the Cecile B DeMille Award. He attended with his new wife Amal and wore a "Je suis Charlie" badge on his tuxedo in memory of the French terror attacks

Joining Clooney in carrying the "Je suis Charlie" message were stars including Helen Mirren and Kathy Bates

The Imitation Game co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley were on the red carpet with their other halves. Cumberbatch was with his fiancee Sophie Hunter, while Knightley was accompanied by her musician husband James Righton

This year's ceremony - the 72nd in its history - was co-hosted for the third consecutive year by Tina Fey (left) and Amy Poehler. It is the first major show of the awards season, which culminates in the Oscars next month

Michael Keaton picked up the prize for best actor in a musical or comedy film for his role in Birdman

Julianne Moore was rewarded for her performance in the film Still Alice with a Golden Globe for best actress in film drama

The cast and director of the film Boyhood posed with their prizes after the movie won the best film drama, category. It was filmed over 12 years to capture the growing pains of a young American boy

Salma Hayek was among the other big names at the ceremony, which recognises both film and television production

Rap artist Common posed backstage after he and singer John Legend - seen in the background with his wife Chrissy Teigan - won best original song in a film for Glory from the film Selma

Amy Adams was a winner on the night in the best actress in a musical or comedy film category, for the film Big Eyes
