McMafia: The scale of human trafficking in numbers

More than 18,000 people are victims of human trafficking every year, according to the UN's latest figures.

Yet the true scale of the trade in human lives is thought to be much greater than these numbers suggest.

Like Lyudmilla, a young beautician featured in the BBC One drama McMafia, victims are forced into a life of modern-day slavery.

McMafia is broadcast on BBC One and available after broadcast on the BBC iPlayer. The next episode is at 2100 on Sunday, 7 January.

Video produced by Sandra Rodriguez Chillida and Lucy Rodgers.
