Conservative MP Sir David Amess has died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in Essex.

A Conservative backbencher for nearly 40 years, Sir David entered Parliament in 1983 as the MP for Basildon

He was married with five children. He is pictured here with his wife Julia, their fourth child daughter Alexandra and two of their older children, David and Katherine


Before becoming an MP, Sir David had served on Newham Council in London


Sir David frequently competed in the annual Westminster Dog Of The Year competition


In 2013 Sir David's dogs Lily and Bo were beaten by Alan Duncan's dog Noodle


The MP was known for his championing of Southend, including a long-running campaign to win city status for the town



Sir David was part of the British delegation at the Conference In Support Of Freedom and Democracy In Iran in Paris in 2018
