WW2: Fighting Axis forces and 'gut-folding' fear
Serving on a Sherman tank in an armoured unit of the Eighth Army, Tom Gillham fought in the desert battles of North Africa in 1943, where he witnessed the surrender of the Italian First Army.
He then fought in the Italian campaign and saw action around Monte Cassino.
Throughout the battle against the Axis forces, Tom also recalls his more personal battle against fear.
We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.
The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
