Former England and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Bert Williams has received his MBE.

Mr Williams, England's keeper in the 1950 World Cup, was honoured in this year's Birthday Honours.

The 90-year-old from Shifnal, Shropshire, described it as the "icing on the cake" of a wonderful life.

He was honoured for his services to football and to charity and said he had been looking forward to his trip to Buckingham Palace.

He played 28 matches for England during a career in which he won both the FA Cup and the League Championship.

Speaking before the event, he said it was something he "could only dream about".

"You think it could never happen to you, it happens to other people," he said.

"It's a wonderful, wonderful, thing. I appreciate it immensely."
