Sites bidding for world heritage status

The Lake District and the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow feature on a list to potentially be nominated for world heritage status.
Tourism and heritage minister John Penrose announced 11 sites had been selected for the tentative list.
The Lake District was one of those chosen from 38 applications.
The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow also features, although it is already being considered for the status by Unesco.
In January, the government announced the monastery was being put forward as the UK's latest nomination for world heritage site status.
The monastery, comprising St Peter's Church in Wearmouth and St Paul's Church, Jarrow, was a major international centre of learning and culture in the 7th and 8th Centuries.
It will be considered by the World Heritage Committee in 2012.
An independent panel considered the 38 applications to produce the shortlist.
The tentative list will be submitted to Unesco with the aim of nominating new sites from 2012.
Among the UK sites already classed as world heritage sites are Durham Castle and Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall.
