Glyndebourne Opera House wind turbine installed

A wind turbine to power Glyndebourne Opera House is being installed on the South Downs following years of protests and a public inquiry.

Five vehicles carrying sections of the 70m (230ft) turbine from Purfleet in Essex arrived earlier this week.

It was approved by the government despite protesters telling the public inquiry it would damage the landscape.

Glyndebourne said the 900 kW turbine would produce about 90% of the electricity used by the opera house.

Gus Christie, Glyndebourne's executive chairman, said: "We are very excited about the arrival of our wind turbine.

"The opportunity to create our own power will significantly contribute to our aim of becoming carbon neutral in our direct operations.

"We hope our turbine will raise awareness of renewable energy and its associated environmental benefits."

Broadcaster Sir David Attenborough was among supporters of the plan at the public inquiry.
