A record number of journeys has been made from East Midlands Parkway station over the past year, according to train operator East Midlands Trains.

The station, which is about to mark three years since it opened in 2009, has seen the number of passengers increase by almost 120%.

An East Midlands Trains' spokesman said about 450,000 journeys had been made from the station over the past year.

The £25m station near junction 24 of the M1 took 10 years to plan and build.

'Fast links'

Marc Turley, Head of Commercial for East Midlands Trains, said: "Since the opening of East Midlands Parkway, we've seen the number of passengers using the station steadily growing as more people become aware of its convenient location, easy parking and fast links to London."

More than 100 services stop each day, with trains to and from London every 15 to 20 minutes at peak times.

The station has four platforms, step-free access and 850 parking spaces. It also uses a ground-heat system as well as locally sourced and recycled materials.
