Rail union Aslef said cutting pension payments during the slump was irresponsible

The last of six one day strikes by drivers on East Midlands Trains (EMT) has begun.

Union Aslef called the industrial action in a dispute about plans by the firm to cut contributions to its pension fund.

Talks between the two sides last week ended without agreement and another union, the RMT, has said it will hold its own strike ballot.

No new dates for industrial action have yet been announced.

EMT has insisted the strikes are unnecessary as staff pension benefits would be unaffected.

But Aslef has disputed the calculations and said the company has not entered into meaningful negotiations.

EMT said it would work to keep disruption to a minimum but passengers are advised to check its <link> <caption>website</caption> <url href="http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/AboutUs/News/Pages/_EastMidlandsTrainspledgedthatitwouldcontinuetoruntrainsforpassengersdespitetheindustrialaction.aspx" platform="highweb"/> </link> before travelling.
