Hot weather causes surge in 999 calls

The hot weather has led to more 999 calls being made on Saturday than were made on New Year's Eve.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said 3,211 emergency calls were made on Saturday, compared with 2,815 on New Year's Eve, traditionally their busiest day of the year.

The service said the vast majority of calls were alcohol-related.

It said it had also treated a number of people for breathing problems brought on by hot weather.

The service also renewed its warning over the dangers of swimming in open water.

A teenage boy died on Saturday while swimming in a lake at a quarry in the Malvern Hills.
