Detectives in Luton are appealing for information after receiving reports of shots being fired at a recreation area in Marsh Farm.
The shots were reported in the park close to The Moakes and the Purley Centre at about 17:30 BST on Wednesday.
No one was injured. The area was being examined by scene of crime officers.
Bedfordshire Police said officers were increasing patrols in the area and speaking with local residents and provide reassurance.
Det Ch Insp Dave Quarmby, who is leading the force's fight against gun crime, said: "A number of people have come forward and spoken with officers about what happened last night but this area was very busy and there are potentially other key witnesses who have yet to speak with the police.
"I would urge these people to come forward now and reassure them that whatever they say will be used in strict confidence."
The shots mark the eleventh shooting incident in Luton since the start of the year.
