A £8m boost to engineering and science research at Cambridge University is being used to attract creative people.

The Dyson Engineering Centre, funded by inventor and businessman James Dyson, opens next year.

When complete the four-storey facility will accommodate 2,000 students working on research and design.

The director of the university's engineering faculty, Philip Guildford, said the donation was the largest ever received by the department.

"We want to create the right social environment to encourage engineers, designers and researchers," he said.
