Councillors discuss Navitus Bay wind farm impact

Navitus Bay would be located between Dorset and the Isle of Wight

The benefits of a giant wind farm off the coast of Dorset would be outweighed by the adverse impacts, councillors have concluded.

Planners at Purbeck District Council met earlier to discuss the impact the proposed Navitus Bay wind farm would have on the area.

Developers say the proposals for nearly 200 giant wind turbines could generate enough power for up to 700,000 homes.

But councillors objected to the plans at a planning committee meeting.

Navitus Bay has said the development would have a "significant positive impact" on the local economy.

But the plans have already been opposed by a number of Dorset MPs, Bournemouth Borough Council and the National Trust, while Unesco said it could affect the Jurassic Coast's World Heritage status.
