Music transforms inner city Newcastle children's lives

Classical music is transforming children's lives in a Tyneside inner city area as part of an innovative project called In Harmony at Sage Gateshead.

The BBC documentary The Geordie Symphony School followed the journey of children from Hawthorn Primary School in Newcastle.

Two years ago none of the school children had ever picked up an orchestral instrument.

Now they are rehearsing to play a special concert with leading orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, at Sage Gateshead.

The Geordie Symphony School is broadcast on Friday, 8 May at 19:30 GMT on BBC Four and for 30 days thereafter on the iPlayer.
