Hundreds of horse pictures featuring the colour blue have been posted on social media in tribute to a nine-year-old girl who died after a horse riding accident on Saturday.

Bonnie Armitage, who lived near Wantage in Oxfordshire, was kicked by a horse while on her pony during an organised ride in Gloucestershire. An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned earlier. This image of a rider in a vivid blue outfit was posted on Facebook by Sophie Callahan Photography.

In a statement, Bonnie's parents Nick and Polly described her as a "beautiful, vivacious and compassionate girl". Erin Williams Dressage posted this picture on Facebook in tribute to Bonnie.

A Facebook page was set up asking people to use the hashtag #blueforBonnie while posting horse-related photos of themselves. The page says blue was Bonnie's favourite colour. Hannah Bishop tweeted this picture of a boy in a blue jumper grooming a horse.

Sophie Conway tweeted this image which features different shades of blue on the jockey and jumping posts. Twitter said more than 1,000 people had so far tweeted using the hashtag.

Izabelle Marmfors, in Sweden, joined in with the tributes by posting this image of herself wearing a blue jockey outfit. Instagram has registered more than 7,600 posts featuring the hashtag.

In tribute, Bonnie's parents said she loved riding and was "never happier than when with her Shetland pony, Lindsay". This picture was posted on Twitter by Nicola Ainsworth.

Cheltenham Racecourse joined the #blueforBonnie campaign by posting three pictures from previous races. Bonnie's parents said: "We will miss her more than we can say, and we greatly value the prayers of so many of our friends."
