Confidential items have been stolen from a police officer's car, the West Midlands force has said.

But it has not confirmed reports that the theft was from the car of counter-terrorism boss Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale, external.

Police said a locked metal box containing documents relating to police matters was taken.

The box was locked in the boot of an unmarked car, police said. They did not say where or when the theft happened.

The statement said: "An investigation has been launched after items were stolen from a West Midlands Police officer's unmarked car.

"A number of personal items were taken during the theft along with a locked metal box that contained documents relating to police matters. The box was locked in the boot.

"The officer remains at work."
