The Met Office says it could lead to hazardous conditions

A weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for "strong winds and large coastal waves" on Thursday.

The forecaster said a yellow warning would be in place for south and south-west England from 07:00 to 23:59 GMT.

It said it could lead to "hazardous conditions" and there was a "small chance of longer journey times or cancellations" of public transport.

It comes as weather phenomenon El Niño near Peru is disrupting the trade winds globally, as well as the jet stream.

The Met Office said there was also a chance of power cuts, and injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto seafronts, roads and properties.

The warning covers the Isles of Scilly, across parts of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, West Sussex, up to Brighton in East Sussex.

It does not cover areas such as Launceston, Bude and north Devon.
