The EV charging points work with a 'swipe card'
Charging points for electric cars are now live in Milton Keynes.
The six points, on three posts able to supply two cars each, are based in the retail district.
They are the first of 50 charging points, 150 in total over the next three years, to be located in the city.
Their introduction is part of the government's Plugged in Places Scheme, a commitment to provide a national recharging network for electric and plug-in vehicles.
Annual membership of the scheme will cost £50 and provide access to the posts and free electricity.
Alex Constantinides, assistant director of transport at Milton Keynes Council, said: "This is the start of delivering our innovative transport vision and strategy for now and the future, supporting both the council's and the government's objectives to reduce carbon emissions.
"Milton Keynes continues to be on the cutting edge and the city that 'can do'."
The Milton Keynes scheme will be interoperable with electric vehicle schemes in Oxford and Cambridge, allowing members to access charging posts there.
