An investigation has been launched into the "arrest and restraint" of a man who is now in hospital with neck injuries.

The 19-year-old student, described as being black and 5ft 5in (1.65m) tall, was arrested outside Elements nightclub in Bedford on Monday morning.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has appealed for witnesses to help its investigation.

Commissioner Mary Cunneen said: "We will be carefully examining how the man sustained a very serious injury."

The incident happened on Mill Street between 01:00 and 02:00 BST and involved police officers and door staff, the IPCC said.

The injured man was wearing a white T-shirt, black combat trousers and black trainers. He has short hair, a beard, and is of "muscular build".

The IPCC said the incident had been referred by Bedfordshire Police on Monday.

Ms Cunneen said: "We are independently investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's arrest and the injuries he sustained.

"We would also be grateful for any mobile phone footage that may have been recorded."
