Police are appealing for information after a fatal incident on the M1.

The motorway was shut for several hours during the rush-hour northbound between junction five for Watford and junction six for Bricket Wood in Hertfordshire.

A man, aged in his 30s, died at the scene and police are looking to identify a vehicle which struck him.

The road reopened at about 10:45 BST, National Highways said. The police appealed for anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

Sgt Alex Ward from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family at this very difficult time.

"Our inquiries are at a very early stage, but we believe that the man may have fallen from a bridge above the carriageway and subsequently been involved in a collision with a vehicle.

"We are working to identify the vehicle and are appealing to anyone who may have been driving in the area around the time, particularly any HGV drivers or anyone who has any information, to please come forward."
