Tom Lockyer: Luton Town fans show support after cardiac arrest

Luton Town fans said it was amazing to see "the world uniting behind Tom Lockyer" after their captain collapsed on the pitch.

Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest during Saturday's Premier League match at Bournemouth.

There has been a huge outpouring of support for the defender.

The Luton Town Supporter's Trust posted a video saying: "Stay strong Tom Lockyer".

Kevin Harper from the Trust said: "I don't think football's relevant right now. All we're thinking about right now is Tom."

Luton said Lockyer is "awaiting the results before the next steps for his recovery are determined".

The game at the Vitality Stadium was eventually abandoned after Lockyer received medical treatment midway through the second half.

The 29-year-old was responsive as he was carried off on a stretcher to applause and taken to hospital.

On Saturday, Luton said Lockyer was "stable and currently undergoing further tests".

'Football doesn't matter'

Fan Mike Fanning described the "disbelief" as Lockyer collapsed.

"We knew as soon as Tom was on the ground, it must be really, really serious. People were staring and praying and chatting, and just hoping against all hope for good news."

Mr Fanning said he and his friends went out in Bournemouth later "and toasted Tom's health, respectfully".

"We were all numb, because he's one of our own isn't he - we all have a close bond at Luton.

"It's one of these rare occasions where football doesn't matter - we all love our football, we're home and away.

"But we're not bothered, it's all about Tom and his recovery - that's all we pray and wish for," he said.

Luton Town Ladies wish Lockyer "a speedy recovery" at their FA Cup match on Sunday.

Luton Town Ladies - who are affiliated to the men's club - also showed their support for Lockyer at their Women's FA Cup match against Keynsham on Sunday.

The women's team posed with a number 4 football shirt - the number worn by Lockyer.

"Everyone at Luton Town Ladies wishes Tom a speedy recovery," the team said.

'Our club will do everything in their power for you'

We Are Luton Town member Ollie Kay says Luton players will continue with Tom's "steely determination"

Ollie Kay from We Are Luton Town said: "From the top down we are together.

"Whatever happens this season, I know that that the players will do it for Tom, and will play with his steely determination even if he isn't on the pitch."

He added: "It's simply amazing to see the world uniting behind Tom.

"Get better Tom. I know that our club will do everything in their power for you."

Hatters fan Kevin Harper thanked all the medics and Bournemouth's fans

Kevin Harper from the Luton Town Supporter's Trust thanked "everyone in the Bournemouth end" for supporting Lockyer, both medical staff and fans.

"For their fans to join in with Luton singing "Oh Tommy Tommy" - it shows rivalries can be put to one side.

"For the whole ground to cheer Tommy's name while he was stretchered off - it was full of respect and class," he said.

"It made you realise football is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. We're just human beings going to a game of football, and we came together as one to rally around Tom," he added.
