M25 traffic warning as Peterborough United play Portsmouth F.C

Sports fans could face "long delays" after a section of the M25 was closed to demolish a bridge.

A five-mile stretch, between junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey, will remain shut until 06:00 GMT on Monday.

Portsmouth football fans traveling to Peterborough were warned to plan their journeys ahead of a weekend match.

National Highways said: "Only travel this stretch if essential. Long delays expected".

It is the first time there has been a scheduled daytime closure of all lanes on the M25 since it opened in 1986.

People travelling to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, and the Channel ports, could also be impacted.

Portsmouth F.C. warned fans to "plan your journey accordingly" as they travelled to play Peterborough United at home for a 15:00 GMT kick off.

National Highways project lead on the works, Jonathan Wade, added: "Drivers should only use the M25 if their journey is absolutely necessary."

He also urged drivers not to "try to be clever" and seek out alternatives routes through villages as they were not well suited to high numbers of vehicles.
