The photo of a mysterious aviator dates from the early 20th Century

A photo of a female aviator from the early 20th Century has been published online in an attempt to find her identity.

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies posted the picture on social media in a bid to find out more.

Julie Gregson, head of archives, said it was believed the photo dates from sometime after 1915.

She said: "People can help us fill in the gaps and find out the story behind this mystery photo."

Ms Gregson added that it had been suggested by some on social media that the plane behind her was an Avro 504 J model.

She said: "Apparently after the war these planes were used for pleasure flying as well.

"We would really love to find the woman's name, date and context of the photo."
