Police said "for reasons unknown at this time, a silver Range Rover left the road" on Monday night

Two people died when a car crashed into trees along a motorway, police said.

Hertfordshire Police said the collision took place on the southbound carriageway of the M1 near Watford at about 20:10 BST on Monday.

A man and woman died at the scene, and three other people - who were all passengers in the car - were taken to hospital.

Sgt Stephanie Corletto said officers were "particularly keen" to hear from anyone with dashcam footage.

The incident, which involved a silver Range Rover, took place between junction six and junction five.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected at this extremely sad and difficult time," said Sgt Corletto.

"We need to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or events prior to it, and hasn't yet spoken to police."

The force said it did not yet know why the car left the road, before hitting the trees.
