The University of Reading has applied to demolish a halls of residence to build 100 new homes.

Under the plans, the 360-room Sibly Tower and its grounds in Redhatch Drive, Earley, would be replaced with houses, apartments and open space.

The Berkshire university said student accommodation was now concentrated on its Whiteknights campus and Sibly Hall would not be needed after 2012.

A mast on the top of the building would also be relocated under the plans.
