FA Legends team beat Army in Madejski Stadium fundraiser

Football legends edged out a British Army side at Reading's Madejski Stadium in a game to raise money for two military charities.

The FA Legends team, managed by Roy Hodgson, featured former England defender Gary Neville.

The Army side was coached by England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce.

The game, organised by the Football Association to mark its 150th anniversary, finished 4-2 to the FA Legends.

'Incredible people'

Goals from Tore Andre Flo, Kevin Kilbane, Ben Shepherd and Jan Age Fjortoft helped seal the victory after the game had been level at 2-2 at half time.

Royal Signals Cpl Jay Bates and Sgt Keith Emmerson scored for the Army side.

Hodgson's team included players such as Matt Le Tissier, Ledley King and former Germany and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Stuart Pearce was proud of his Army side's efforts in defeat.

He said: "Both organisations have marked their own special year and underpinning it all is the charitable donations that will be made to two very good causes.

"The Army team were absolutely delighted to be out to there and with the way the game has gone.

"They played well in parts and did well to score two goals against the talent that was on show.

"I've actually seen them play better than they did today.

"I think they might have been a touch overawed by who they were up against."

The game raised funds for the Team Army Sports Foundation and the Royal British Legion.
