Slough towers 'would damage Windsor Castle views'

Developer Criterion Capital said it had now scaled back its plans

Five planned tower blocks in Slough would "damage the character" of views from Windsor Castle, a council report says.

Slough Borough Council met on Thursday to discuss the plans for the revamp of Queensmere Shopping Centre.

In its report it said "a complete rethink of the design strategy needs to be made".

Developer Criterion Capital said it had scaled back its plans and presented a revised version at the meeting.

'Adverse impact'

Mike Hughes, from Criterion Capital, said the town centre was currently "deserted" at night and said the development, which also includes retails units and restaurants, would bring "activity" to the town.

He added it would also benefit businesses currently in the area.

Changes to the plans include the removal of one of the towers, which are up to 108m (354ft) high, and a reduction in the number of apartments by about one third to 625.

The council said it was taking the opportunity to comment on the original design of the scheme before a final report is submitted.

It added this would be presented to the planning committee at the "earliest opportunity".

Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council has also objected to the proposals because of their "adverse impact" on the skyline.
