Downton Abbey: Highclere stay in forces charity auction

It is hoped bidders will shell out more than £10,000 for the privilege of an uptown experience at "Downton Abbey"

An overnight stay at Highclere Castle, the location of the ITV period drama Downton Abbey, is being auctioned to raise money for armed forces charities.

Lots in the auction, by Christies, also include a cooking lesson and a champagne three-course meal.

The Heroes At Highclere auction coincides with theHampshire castle's Centenary Stories exhibition, marking the anniversary of the start of World War One.

The online auction ends on 14 August.

The exhibition includes period artefacts used to explain the experiences people involved in World War One.

One item is a silver medal for growing vegetables for troops on the front line.

The auctioneer said it was expected that the overnight stay lots, which include dinner and cocktails for three couples, would make in excess of £10,000 each.
