An eyewitness has told the BBC she heard screaming and saw men with "big knives" rampaging down her street smashing car windows.

Police are investigating the disorder which involved people armed with machetes and samurai swords.

The unrest was reported in the area of Regents Street in Reading in the early hours of Friday morning.

Resident Rajbir Kaur Sarwara, who was woken at about 03:00 GMT, said the group were targeting vehicles.

"We heard screaming people, we saw from the window about six, seven really big guys smashing windows with big knives," she told the BBC.

"They tried to break the front window [of one] but they couldn't, then they broke the driver's side and the other side."

The married mother-of-two said their vehicle was among those attacked.

"Our car was parked in the normal parking space and they hit our car so badly the car went on the kerb."

She said she was "scared" and was concerned about safety because "usually I work in the evenings, so it's always on my mind that something can happen".

Thames Valley Police said a Section 60 order, which gives officers special powers to stop and search members of the public, will remain in place until the early hours of Saturday.

It will be reviewed and potentially extended if necessary, the force added.

No arrests have been made.
