Reading council suggests road changes to help pedestrians and cyclists

The council hopes the changes would improve air quality in the town and speed up journey times for bus users
A council has looked at how to improve journeys for bus users, cyclists and pedestrians on a major town road.
Reading Borough Council has reviewed how people travel in the town as part of its Local Transport Strategy 2040.
The strategy includes making changes to Oxford Road, which currently has one lane for traffic in each direction.
The council's aims for the road include making more space for pedestrians and cyclists and adding bus lanes.
It is hoped the changes would improve air quality and speed up journey times for bus users.
Other ideas include removing excessive street furniture, reallocating road space for walkers and cyclists and re-routing freight traffic from Oxford Road.
The strategy suggests a new outbound bus lane on Oxford Road, to go alongside the existing traffic lane, running between the bus stop opposite Tidmarsh Street and the stop prior to Reading Retail Park.
Residents can have their say on the Consult Reading website.
