One of the heads of the 2012 Games is due to visit Birmingham later as the city prepares for its role in the run-up to the Olympics.

Sir Charles Allen, Chairman of the Nations and Regions for Locog, will visit several of the venues involved.

The Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr will host the USA track and field pre-Olympic training camp in July.

Jamaica's team will be based at Birmingham University's campus as they prepare for the Games.

It means more than 200 international athletes will be based in the city, including top sprinters Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay.

As head of the Nations and Regions group on Locog, Sir Charles is responsible for ensuring the Olympics benefits areas of the UK beyond London.

While in Birmingham he is also due to watch displays by local dancers and other performers.

A special concert to mark the 50th anniversary of Jamaica's independence is also expected to be launched in Birmingham later.

The event, due to be held in Symphony Hall on 25 July, is expected to celebrate the city's links with the Caribbean island.

The line-up includes Jamelia, Jaki Graham, Musical Youth, Jimmy James, the Town Hall Gospel Choir and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

The Jamaican athletes are expected to attend the concert before they leave for London on 26 July.
