Jobs cut threat at West Midlands Fire Service

West Midlands Fire Service says it is to axe more than 200 jobs due to budget cuts.

A spokesman said a voluntary redundancy programme had started within its support services department, which includes cooks and cleaners.

A review of administration and support staff services was started in May 2010.

The service said it was facing a £10m reduction in government funding between 2011 and 2013, with the cut expected to reach £30m by 2014.

A consultation period has started with trade unions, a spokesman said.

"Every stage of this process is being carried out in consultation with the trades unions and other representative bodies and a series of meetings are scheduled to discuss the timing and scope of the voluntary redundancy exercise.

"There are 214 personnel who fall within the scope of this review and consultation with the unions is continuing.

"These discussions will help us to determine actual numbers affected."
