Ellie Simmonds: Aldridge parade for Paralympian

Paralympians Ellie Simmonds and Jon-Allan Butterworth were cheered by crowds

Paralympic star Ellie Simmonds has been honoured with a second homecoming parade in the West Midlands.

Crowds lined the streets of Aldridge to cheer on the swimmer and Paralymic cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth as they passed by in a horse-drawn carriage.

The parade was organised by shopkeepers who knew 17-year-old Ellie when she lived in the area.

Earlier this week, the swimmer was welcomed in Walsall with an open-top bus tour.

Ellie, who won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the London Games, signed autographs after the Aldridge parade.

She said: "It's nice there's loads of people and, in this village of Aldridge, everybody knows each other and it's nice they are [all] celebrating."

Ellie relocated with her mother to Swansea at the age of 11 so she could train in an Olympic size 50-metre pool.

Jon-Allan Butterworth won three silver medals in cycling in the Paralympics.

Butterworth, of Sutton Coldfield, lost his left arm in 2007 in an insurgent rocket attack in Iraq while serving with the RAF.
