Broad Street was closed until crowds dispersed

Six men arrested after a "serious outbreak of violence" in Birmingham city centre have been bailed.

Trouble started on Broad Street outside Gatecrasher nightclub in the early hours of Sunday at about 03:50 BST, said West Midlands Police.

Five of the men were arrested on suspicion of wounding after a fight that led to a 39-year-old man being knocked unconscious, police said.

Three officers suffered minor injuries as bottles and bricks were thrown.

Insp Matt Downs, said: "This was a serious outbreak of violence, it's understood it involved a nasty attack in which a man was assaulted."

Five of the arrested men, aged between 19 and 25 and from Sheldon, Hall Green, Billesley and Bordesley Green, were released on conditional bail that bans them from any city centre entertainment venue.

They were also banned from contacting each other.

A sixth man, aged 21 and from Sheldon, was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the disorder, which led to Broad Street being closed off until crowds had dispersed.
