The Cake International show has been taking place at Birmingham's NEC. Alongside trade stands and demonstrations, the event has attracted bakers from across the country competing in a range of categories.

The show claims to be the largest competition and largest show of its kind in the world. Some of the competition entries incorporated detailed icing and other decoration.

The competitors, many of them amateur bakers, were able to take part in 14 categories, including sections for junior and student bakers.

One competition category was dedicated to cake replicas of handbags and shoes.

The Cake International show, which closed on Sunday, was celebrating its 20th year at the NEC.

Lara Clarke, from Brownhills, in the West Midlands, said she had been "really chuffed" to win a gold for her 5ft 5in (1.65m) high cake of Johnny Depp.

Ms Clarke, who has only been baking for two years, said she had been inspired to create the cake after watching Pirates of the Caribbean.

Pastry chef Martin Hargreaves from Preston said he was “gobsmacked” to be crowned classic cupcake winner then overall cupcake champion.

The 2013 Best in Show award was won by Rose Macefield, for her extremely detailed cake in the shape of a fishing basket.
