A lottery ticket holder who won £12m has failed to come forward to collect their prize, meaning the money will now go to 'good causes'.

The National Lottery operator Camelot said the winning EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle ticket was bought in Birmingham on 31 May.

The prize was £1m a month for a year.

Lottery rules state that after 180 days the money, plus interest earned over its unclaimed period, is given to National Lottery Good Causes.

The ticket, with the winning sequence of letters and numbers of JRG437445, was bought in the Ladywood area of the city.

A National Lottery spokesman said: "We tried very hard to find the ticket holder through various awareness-raising drives in the area and it's a real shame that they have missed out."

The winner had until 23:00 GMT on Wednesday to claim the jackpot.

Amarjit Singh, who runs Ladywood Supermarket, said people had started to "panic" as the deadline loomed.

"I've been asked by one customer to check the CCTV for when the ticket was purchased in May," he said.

The unclaimed prize will now be added to £30bn raised through The National Lottery since 1994.

Camelot said this has helped more than 420,000 projects across the arts, sports, heritage, charities, health, education and the environment.
